As materials go, cork is an incredible player. When harvested, cork bark is a luxury, renewable material that has been used for industrial applications for years. Only recently has cork material entered mainstream sports applications. Combining sustainability and clean aesthetic, cork is a natural alternative to traditional manufacturing materials.
Cork trees grow in Portugal and other Mediterranean countries. Harvesting cork means stripping the bark material from the living tree, which can be performed without sacrificing the health of the tree. The sheets of cork can then be used for various applications.
The most high quality sheets are used whole for applications such as luxury hand bags. Granulated cork can be re-purposed for use in making new sheets with springy or dense properties and can be applied to the manufacture of sports products such as yoga blocks and yoga mats.
At The January Company, we embrace using cork materials from our line of cork yoga mats and blocks to our upcoming luxury lunch totes.
